CBB/ILT Communications Bootcamp ESL

Run over four weeks, the Bootcamp starts with an instructor-led two-day workshop followed by three follow-up sessions, one in each subsequent week.

The key objectives of the workshop are (a) to establish the distance travelled by each participant measured by initial competence against final competence and (b) to increase their overall level of awareness of how they communicate with others, using presentations as a medium. A key focus is the development of English-language use for speakers of English as a second (or third or fourth) language.  Prior to the workshop, participants are asked to submit a piece of writing for evaluation.

Outline of the two-day workshop

Over two days, participants learn the basics of good communication, the key elements of public speaking, and the skills needed to provide effective feedback. Interactive exercises offer them many opportunities to speak in a comfortable, supportive environment. Attention is paid to delivering and receiving feedback as well as taking responsibility for how they communicate both orally and in writing.

Outline of the assessment days

Over three follow-up weeks, participants prepare a five-minute presentation on a topic of their choice. In week 1, the challenge is to concentrate on structure. In week 2, the focus is on content. And, in week 3, the emphasis is on delivery. Each week, participants present to the rest of the group and receive one minute of feedback from their colleagues. Then, in the afternoon, they each have a 30-minute feedback session with one of the trainers, during which they self-score from 1 to 10, with one being not at all happy with their performance and 10 being very happy. At the end of each follow-up session, participants receive a written report collating feedback from their colleagues and trainers, evaluating their feedback to others, and giving suggestions for improvement.
